Southern Shih Tzu Rescue, Inc aka Southern Shih Tzu and TOY BREED RESCUE (SSTR) is a 501(c)3- IRS registered charity organization, with over 18 years of rescue experience. ALL volunteer rescue, located in southern Louisiana and central Alabama. Focusing on rescuing dogs from kill shelters, puppy mill /breeder survivors and on rare occasions taking an owner surrender, but only if we have NO dogs awaiting rescue at a local shelter. We are NOT a public shelter, we do not take in lost or stray dogs or handle animal control contracts. Unlike most rescues, in addition to helping healthy dogs, we save what many consider unadoptable; due to age, medical issue and socialization/behavior issues. We consider all dogs worthy of living out their natural life span!! SSTR provides them with that chance of life, either with a new loving adoptive family or through our Sanctuary Foster Program Facility. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding and foster space, we are limited to the number of dogs saved. All dogs receive complete vet care, which includes: spay/neuter, vaccinations, heart worm test, deworm and treatment of all other medical issues, based on vet recommendation (heartworm treatment, dental work, hip surgery, eye surgery, liver shunt surgery, etc...) We spend thousands and thousands of dollars yearly taking care of our dogs, with all adoption fees and donations going directly to vet care. We have a very thorough adoption screening process, our goal is to place our rescue dogs in a safe, responsible and loving home, that understands the dedication involved in having a pet family member. We are looking for successful life-long adoption. We do not do parking lot, same day or on the spot adoptions, this does not benefit the person adopting or the dog in need of a home. Adopting is a life-time commitment and doesn't need to be made on the spot in a parking lot- We appreciate our applicants taking time to make the right decision when adding a new pet family member to their home! At one point, for several years we were rescuing over 350 dogs per year, with the help of a couple rescue partners in the north. This involved having a quarantine facility in AL, providing vet care, health certificates and transport for dogs going to partner rescues. However, in the past couple of years, due to the increased interest of northern states that work directly with southern shelters, we have "happily" been able to go back to good ole fashion rescue. SSTR also participates in local animal welfare events, promoting the education of animal welfare, prevention of abuse/neglect, spay/neuter programs and encourage people to adopt shelter and rescue pets, reducing the number of animals killed in shelters. We look forward to a world where our relationship with animals is guided by compassion and seek a truly humane society in which animals are respected and where the human-animal bond is strong.
